It is with great sadness that the Assyrian Australian Association announce the passing of our first President. Youaw Toma Kanna passed away on Thursday 21 February 2019.
Youaw was the founder and establisher of AAA in November 1969.
Youaw was an exceptional individual, he migrated to Australia with his family in 1963 and had a vision for his then small community in Australia.
With the community increasing it was time the Assyrian Australian Community had a Priest, Youaw spoke to the Late Mar Eshai Shimun XXI and within 3 months the late Qasha Younan Gewargis from Lebanon was appointed.
In 1970 he came across the property at 673-683 Smithfield Road Edensor Park and that’s where he wanted Nineveh to be built, which is now known as Nineveh Reception.
In 1970 the Assyrian flag was placed in Fairfield City Centre, 1976 he also initiated to have streets in the suburb of Edensor Park with Assyrian names, Ashur and Nineveh.
Assyrian Radio 2EA now known as SBS commenced in 1976.
Youaw will always be remembered for his love and dedication to his community and will be sadly missed.
The family will be accepting condolences at Edessa Hall 7-9 Greenfield Rd Greenfield Park on Saturday 23rd Feb and Sun 24th Feb from 5pm to 8pm.
The funeral will be held at St Hurmizd Cathedral 7-9 Greenfield Rd Greenfield Park on Monday 25th Feb at 9:30am and he will be laid to rest at Kemps Creek Cemetery. This will be followed by a breakfast at Nineveh Reception 673-683 Smithfield Rd Edensor Park.
To the Kanna family, on behalf of the Board and our members please accept our sincere Condolences. ... See MoreSee Less
